Artist Statement

My work uses signs, symbols, patterns, words, and numbers to create narratives that challenge viewers to uncover meaning. The meaning is there to be deciphered, but it is presented in a way that leaves room for individual interpretation. Central to my practice is the collection of fragments of text, observations, and ideas recorded in notebooks, that I have been collecting for years. These fragments are revisited, rearranged, and transformed into works that explore coded forms of communication, including ciphers, morse code, shorthand, and numerology, as well as social and political commentary. I am interested in the tension between what is revealed, what is concealed, and how meaning changes from one person to the next. Although many of the topics I explore are serious, my work often includes humor, whimsy, and a touch of nuttiness.
